Python Vertebrae Pendulums

I've sold python vertebrae for bone throwing sets and binding work. These three I've made into pendulums, each a real python vertebra selectively clad in copper and hung on a copper chain you can wear as a necklace.

My vertebra pendulum work started with a single bone. The vertebra called to me to be plated in copper. The chain promptly presented itself. I intended it as a necklace, but it spoke again and said pendulum. I went looking afterward and found the old divination trail waiting there.

I clad these three selectively because I didn't want to bury the bone. The copper gives each one a bright, conductive skin, while the ridges, channels, and hollows of the vertebra still show through, so you can see exactly what you're holding: a piece of a snake's spine.

A snake has no legs and no wings. It moves by its spine. Force rolls through the body in waves, bone to bone, and the whole animal goes where the wave carries it. I read that as force moving out of the unseen and into flesh. A pendulum works the same way: something you can't see moves, and the weight on the chain shows it. Hang a piece of the serpent's own spine on that chain, and the bone goes back to doing what it did in the living snake. It carries the wave.

In Greek mythology, Python was the serpent of Pytho, the old name for Delphi, and guarded the oracle there until Apollo killed it and took the oracle for himself. The priestess who spoke that oracle was called the Pythia.

The word stayed tied to divination. In Acts 16:16, Paul meets a slave girl at Philippi who has a pneuma pythona, a spirit of Python, and brings her masters a lot of money telling fortunes. Paul casts the spirit out. Her masters, seeing their income gone, drag Paul and Silas before the magistrates.

I'm not selling these as Greek ritual objects. They aren't. I'm telling you why python bone belongs in divination, and why I made pendulums out of it.
