These relic stones are supplied by the sanctuary and taken from the Cave of the Archangel on Mount Gargano, Italy.
In 490 CE, through a series of miraculous events, Saint Michael indicated that he had chosen this cave as a shrine in his honor. He appeared to the local bishop and said: “I am the Archangel Michael, and am always in the presence of the Lord. This cave is sacred to me, I have chosen it; I myself am its watchful custodian.”
The cave needed no consecration by a bishop. Michael said: “It is not necessary that you dedicate this church that I myself have consecrated with my presence.”
There exist no first- or second-class relics of Michael, which must be physically touched by or touched to the body of a saint. The stones of Mount Gargano are his third-class relics.
The cave has been a major place of pilgrimage for centuries. Saint Francis of Assisi came on pilgrimage during his Saint Michael's Lent and prayed outside the cave, feeling unworthy to enter.
Over the centuries, the stones have been used in deliverance and exorcism work, as well as for faithful protection and devotion to Michael. Michael is the ultimate defender against evil spirits and entrusted with conveying the souls of the dead to judgment and pleading on their behalf.
