The Story Behind the Project: Last year, driven by a deep respect for the legendary conjureman, Black Herman, I embarked on a journey to find his unmarked grave. Through extensive research, I located his burial site in the Bronx. With the help of @bronxwitch, we performed a rite to purchase grave dirt from his resting place, an offering made with silver coins.

The spirit of Black Herman revealed through divination that he desired a marker for those who seek him out, but not through charity—he wanted to work for his reward. With this in mind, we collaborated to create these powerful Black Herman candles and prayer cards, each infused with the spirit and power of this iconic figure.

About Black Herman: Black Herman was a trailblazing illusionist and stage magician who captivated audiences across segregated America. His book, Black Herman's Secrets of Magic, Mystery and Legerdemain, uniquely blends stage tricks with spiritual wisdom and classic hoodoo practices. In his private life, Herman was a dedicated spiritual conjurer, performing powerful workings on behalf of his clients.

About This Project: In many African and diasporic traditions, the grave of a powerful individual is believed to hold their supernatural power. Collaborating with conjurers in New York and South Carolina, we tracked down the unmarked grave of Black Herman and performed the rite of purchasing his grave dirt with silver coins.

These candles and prayer cards are infused with a spiritual powder made from the dirt of Black Herman's grave, combined with powerful old-school curios. The image on the card, adapted from famous photos, bridges Black Herman’s dual worlds as a stage magician and spiritual conjurer.
