A limited drop metallic gold foil prayer card for High John the Conqueror.
I first planned these cards as a fundraiser for a cultural preservation project with the Spiritualist Church of African Traditions Yahweh. While these were at the printer, the news about Ahmaud Arbery came out.
🕯️Now, 71% of sales will go directly to the I Run With Maud GoFundMe.🕯️
High John is a spirit of incredible power and significance for traditional African American Hoodoo.
It's said he is a prince from the Kongo who was kidnapped into slavery. Stripped of his status, brutalized as if he were not a person but an animal, subjected to every depraved and corrupt whim of the plantation owner, John nevertheless maintained his dignity and composure, and got the best of his wicked captor again and again (and again!).
He has a God-given streak of luck, an easy-going trickster nature, and an ability to conquer every adversary and obstacle with an easy laugh and sudden serendipity.
These very God-given talents led John through countless remarkable confrontations, in which he always triumphed.
Zora Neale Hurston recollects that John escaped slavery by outwitting the Devil himself, winning the love of the Devil's daughter, and escaping back to Africa. He left his power in the root that bears his name, and could arrive at times of great distress to bring relief to the spirits of his people as they endured and survived daily torture and inhuman horror.
Other elders recount that John returned after recollecting himself to liberate his people one at a time, forming a band of guerrilla fighters in the remote mountains. John and his band raided plantations, striking down the overseers and freeing the imprisoned.
In a testament to the appropriative whitewashing of Hoodoo, most depictions of High John show him as a white European king, particularly on mass produced candles, powders, oils, etc.
These cards pay homage to this deified trickster revolutionary by casting him from a painting of an 1800s Kongolese prince. The pattern on the rear face is from a Kongo textile.
All cards will come dressed in High John root extract.
Due to availability of High John root during the current nationwide restrictions, please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery.
I've ordered several products and each one is phenomenal. The attention to detail adds to the power of every item. Very grateful for your work.
The card is beautiful, and it's great to have a visual representation of High John that's historically and culturally accurate
