About High John
High John the Conqueror (aka High John Da Conquer, High John Root, High John Da Conka, High John Root, etc.) is the quintessential staple root of Hoodoo.
According to legend, High John was a Kongo prince, who was captured by European slavers and given the name John when he was sold to a plantation in the Americas.
Maintaining his nobility of spirit and acuity of mind, John faced the horrors of slavery with a wit and skill that allowed him to perpetually outsmart the plantation master and overseers through cunning and guile. It's said that John won his freedom when tricked the Devil himself, and then took the devil's daughter back to Africa to be his wife.
Another rendition of the tale (less cloaked in allegory) tells us that after escaping his enslavement, John took up hiding in the hills and forests, where he founded a settlement of run away slaves. John and his band ruled the wilderness, ambushing plantation slave patrols and waging hit-and-run guerrilla warfare on plantations and their overseers, liberating slaves each time they struck.
Tales of High John and his cunning spread across the plantation south, bringing inspiration and fostering the spirit of resistance for generations.
When the time came for John to pass from the Earthly realm, it's said he placed his power into a root, which could be dug up and awoken whenever his assistance was needed.

How to Use High John the Conqueror Root
The root should be woken up by feeding it high-proof alcohol (or an appropriate alcohol-based spiritual cologne) and cigar smoke. It may be carefully be given fire to give it heat, but it should not be allowed to burn.
Before working the root, call to the spirit of High John and win his regard.
For the descendants of slaves, this is as simple as setting a candle and perhaps a glass of water for him and calling to him over his root.
For others, begin by building a relationship with him. Read Zora Neale Hurston's writing about High John, and look for opportunities to do good works and give charity to his people in his name. Once you've established yourself to John, proceed to set a candle and call to him over the root.
Baptize the root (some use whiskey, some use holy water - John can work with either) and name it, and carry it close to you.
Warm the root up before you work with it - you can keep it against your body, rub it, roll it between your hands or gently use a flame or heat source, depending on the root's size. Speak to it to request the outcome you want, and be sure to reward it with liquor and/or cigar smoke when it performs as requested.
After about 6-12 weeks of working with the root, it will be come a reliable partner. Be sure to feed it regularly (1-2 weeks depending on the size) with an appropriate spiritual oil or cologne and reward it when it performs as requested, like you would with a beloved pet.
