Blessed & Dressed Archangel Michael Medal – Divine Protection
I'm THRILLED to offer two versions of the Archangel Michael medals: the Spanish Colonial iconography showing Michael holding aloft a flaming sword and trampling down the Adversary in the form of a dragon, and the classic image showing Michael warding off the subdued devil.
The difference in the depictions is more than artistic - the symbolism of the images refer to Michael in different states and roles.
The older iconography employed in the Spanish Colonial iconography depicts Michael with his sword flaming, arm extended as if delivering a smiting blow and bearing a shield, as seen in the painting by Raphael from 1504, while the classic image, based on the painting by Guido Reni from the 17th century [pic 4] depicts Michael with his sword pointed to keep the devil at bay and the scales of judgement in his left hand.
In the sword down position (classic), Michael is standing as a guardian, bearing judgement. The devil is depicted as a man, prone under Michael's sandal. This iconography is most suited to invoking Michael as a protector, to supplicate to him for justice, for help overcoming temptations and lower impulses, and for the elevation of the souls of the departed.
In the sword up position, Michael is depicted as an active defender, engaged in spiritual warfare. His espada vencedor (victorious sword) is entirely activated and he bears the shield to deflect any attacks. The devil here is depicted as a dragon. This iconography is especially potent for spiritual defense and warfare, and for engaging and calling on the Archangel to actively engage in battle on one's behalf.
Each medal ships after being blessed in a lamp of Archangel Michael Anointing Oil before the Archangel.
About the Preparation: These traditional Saint Michael medals have been blessed in Michael's lamp, set before his altar, and prayed over. Infused with the oil from his lamp, these medals carry the essence of Michael’s divine protection. The oil has been fixed with Michael's several seals, sigils, and magic squares, along with a 21-part blend of herbs, roots, berries, and resins, giving the medals a sweet and spiced fragrance.
About the Archangel Michael: Archangel Michael is the ultimate champion of Goodness, the divine light of God manifested in the material realm. Revered across the Abrahamic traditions of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, Michael is recognized as a powerful source of protection and salvation.
In the 400+ year-old Ethiopian Gondar Homiliary, known as the Homiliary of the Archangel Michael, Michael is revealed as the angel of the Lord who performed the biblical miracles commemorated in the Book of Exodus. It was Michael who appeared to Moses in the burning bush, parted the Red Sea, and brought judgment upon the gods of the oppressors.
A millennium earlier, Michael appeared to the faithful of Europe, driving away demons, evil spirits, and even famously banishing a deadly plague from Italy. In the 6th century, Pope Gregory I conducted a procession around Rome with an icon of the Virgin Mother, after which Gregory received a vision of Michael sheathing his bloodied sword—a sign that the plague had been defeated and driven from Rome.
Archangel Michael—mi ca El (like unto God)—was revealed to Moses as the esh b'hasneh (the fire in the bush) and guided the children of Israel as the ammud ha'esh (pillar of fire) through the wilderness. He is charged with driving away evil and darkness, trampling the wicked underfoot, and transporting the souls of the departed to the afterlife. In Islam, it is said that his body is covered not with hair but with thousands of tiny tongues that plead constantly for mercy for the souls he shepherds.
Michael also appears throughout many African Diasporic traditions, both as a figure with whom others are syncretized (Agayu, Belie Belcan, and other celestial warriors), and in his own right as San Miguel.
When Moses died, it is said that Satan and Saint Michael each came to claim him. Michael, embodying all that is good, simply said, "The Lord rebuke you," casting the prince of delusions back into Hell. For this reason, Michael is the patron of protectors—soldiers, firefighters, police, and all those who face down evil and wickedness on behalf of the Holy light.
Carry the Blessed & Dressed Archangel Michael Medal with you to invoke his divine protection and light, ensuring that his presence is always near to guard and guide you.
